The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

I was really impressed by the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit that just showed at the Dallas Museum of Art.  My best friend and I visited the exhibit on the night dedicated to fashion students, which featured a special speaker.  It was really interesting to see all of his different designs and how his style has ranged from collection to collection.  Although many of his collections were quit different from one another, you could still tell all of the outfits were Gaultier’s creations, for they were outrageous and pushing the boundaries.

One of my personal favorite looks I saw that evening was his skeleton corset that was worn by Dita von Teese in Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall 2010 Haute Couture collection.  Gaultier may be most known for his controversial corsets designed for Madonna with the pointed bras, but this corset is so unlike what he has done before.  His skeleton corset is pieced together by bones covered in black Swarovski crystals.  The backbone of the corset is gorgeous and very intricately designed.  This look is just so unlike anything I’ve ever seen and although it depicts a skeleton, it still has sex appeal, like a corset should.
Another look that I fell in love with was an elaborate gown that had a leopard skin covering the front.  Being a lover of leopard print I was immediately obsessed, but when I took a closer look, I realized that it was constructed up of tiny beads.  You can really see how much work and time was put into beading a full leopard skin, which looks extremely real from only a slight distance.
